Talking about obesity is not an easy subject, since it is a complex chronic disease that has repercussions on people's life and health that go far beyond an aesthetic problem. Obesity is a medical problem that increases the risk of other diseases and health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and certain types of cancer to name a few. To this we can add all the psychological and social repercussions that it has on the lives of those who suffer from it.
But in our society, it is not easy to talk about obesity. There is a social stigma where a person is devalued or judged for being overweight or obese. We tend to blame the patient for lack of discipline and willpower. We see obesity as a consequence of bad habits and the belief is that with diet and regular exercise, everyone can reach a healthy weight. But obesity is much more than this. It is a chronic disease that approximately 39% of adults in the world suffer from and suffer it from day to day.
These are the reasons why it is so important to TALK ABOUT OBESITY. We must gradually eliminate the stigma of weight in our society. It is very important to educate those who suffer from it so that they understand that their disease is not their fault and that they are not alone; that they understand the associated health risks, and that above all they know their options, that is, the alternatives that exist to treat obesity so that they can make the best decisions according to the degree of obesity and the patient's state of health.
TALKING ABOUT OBESITY is the platform that we will be launching this year to attract and educate Latin Americans who suffer or have a loved one who suffers from obesity, to eliminate the myths that exist around the disease and surgery, as well as eliminate the social stigma. The platform will use various channels such as a website, social media, publicity, and digital campaigns.
You have a key role to support Latin America to continue Talking about Obesity!
